Food is as much a part of you, as it is a part of me. We all need food in order to survive, as it’s the fuel that keeps our body and mind running. Daniel Nadeau is a doctor operating out of Huntington Beach, California; and he can be found wandering up and down the aisles of Ralph’s market, giving people advice about the food they’re eating. He recommends blueberries and raspberries for a smoothie to one customer, as they are “cheaper and great for the brain”. Daniel Nadeau is the program director for the Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes center, which is located relatively close-by to the market (and is also part of the St. Joseph Hoag Health initiative). This center features a prominent “Shop with Your Dog” program that has doctors heading out to the nearby market, helping out patients that had signed up for this movement.
Not only that but shoppers who happen to be passing by will be able to have their question answered as well. Nadeau spotted a box of macaroni and cheese in a nearby shoppers’ cart and figured that he would suggest a whole grain pasta and real cheese alternative. Of course, the shopper met that suggestion with minimal enthusiasm – asking him whether she would have to “make it at that point”. She also talked about how her kids would more than likely reject the dish if she didn’t make it right, and that it’s easier to do things the “box” way.
In America, around 50% of the food you come across has been processed in one way or another. This means that it’s been given added chemicals/ingredients to help preserve the food, allowing it to stay good for longer periods of time. Only 5% of the food we’re eating is plant-based, which is a shocking number, to say the least.
Dr. Nadeau suggests that healthier choices should always remain in the forefront of your food options. It will allow your kids to grow big and strong, but it also keeps everybody eating the food healthy in the process. It’s worth the amount of time it takes to seek out higher-quality foods.
