There are many fruits and vegetables that contain parts (seeds, stems, roots, leaves etc.) that we have been taught are not edible so we throw them away. We see our parents throwing these food scraps away growing up and we think nothing of it. Lately, though I’ve noticed a lot more people becoming conscious of a full plant and the nutritional value of it from head to toe and to not waste something that is potentially edible and very nutritious. A great example is the celery leaves. Most people (and grocery stores) have these cut off so you cannot eat the celery leaves. There are some farms and CSA organizations though that sell celery and leave the celery leaves on.
Why? Are they lazy and don’t want to cut them off or do they realize they are edible? Maybe either or! Celery leaves actually are edible and contain quite a bit more nutrition than the celery stalk itself, you can read more about that here. If you start to understand that food contains many parts such as the root, stem, seeds and leaves you may begin to see your food differently and realize that more of what you’re eating is actually edible or can be used in ways to benefit your health.
An avocado is no exception to that rule. I wouldn’t go eating the skin on an avocado because it feels and looks quite indigestible but the avocado pit is a different story. Most people throw their avocado pit away without even thinking about it, I was one of those people as well until I discovered how it can be used. The pit of an avocado can actually be used in quite a few ways as well as being ingestible, don’t go trying to chew and swallow it just yet though! that could cause choking to occur.
7 Different Ways To Use That Avacado Pit
1. Put The Pit in Your Guacamole: Some people say by putting the avocado pit in their guacamole dip it helps to preserve and keep the freshness of the guacamole dip. Some say it works some say it doesn’t. I haven’t tried this yet but it seems like having the pit in the dip will help to slowly release minerals that may preserve and prolong the avocado portion of the dip because it is closer to its “pit and skin” nature in the environment.
2. Grow More Avocados: Of course, the pit is what grows an avocado so you can grow another tree from the pit itself. If you have land or able conditions and soil it’s worth trying to create more healthy organic food on the house (the house being mother nature.)
3. Make A Dye For Clothing & Fabrics: This woman actually made a pink dye from the avocado pit and peel believe it or not. Who would have thought it would have turned out pink? Read about it here.
4. Use The Pits as Beauty Care: You can dry the avocado pit, grind them up and use them as a face mask exfoliant because it is rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. I will also be experimenting with the pit for more beauty care routines so follow the blog & facebook page for those updates.
5. Drink The Pit!: Like mentioned previously the pit contains calcium, magnesium, and potassium but it is also rich in fiber, antioxidants and are also rich in flavonol that prevents tumor growth. The pit also has anti-inflammatory benefits because of its unique nutritional profile. The pit is beneficial for your digestive system, nervous system, and cardiovascular system. You can simply grind it up and add it to your smoothie to consume it! (I recommend organic avocado’s only) There is a low dose of a fungicidal toxin called persin that animals don’t respond well to in large doses so if you’re allergic to latex, banana, melon or peach you may not respond well to avocado pits.
6. Eat The Pit: Yep, that’s right! Simply grind the pit up and use it in a sauce or dressing recipe to add more minerals and antioxidants. You can use it in many sauce or dressing recipe to add a slightly bitter taste to the sauce or dressing flavor profile.
Avocado pits can be used in so many ways, even beyond eating and drinking! They have nutritional value so add them to your diet every once in a while and get the skin health benefits of the minerals and antioxidant facial exfoliant as well.
