According to doctors, the biggest risk factor in cancer development is a high body mass index (BMI) or being overweight. Why is that though?
Being overweight makes you susceptible to developing both diabetes and heart disease. According to doctors, being overweight allows cancer cells to develop due to the buildup of inflammation. The kinds of cancer that relate to weight include breast cancer, colorectal cancer, kidney cancer and uterine cancer.
With the extra weight, your body becomes a bit more insensitive to insulin, which can lead to diabetes and insulin-related cancers.
Yale University Cancer expert Melinda Irwin said lifestyle behaviors affects a third of every type of cancer. These lifestyle behaviors include your exercise levels and diet. Doctors are urging people to watch the food they consume and to exercise and lose weight. People should also focus on limiting the amount of fat and sugar in your diet, which can lead to persistent stomach fat.
